Building Services

We serve the cities of Magna, Kearns, White City, Emigration Canyon anCommercial Building Inspectord the towns of Copperton and Brighton and unincorporated Salt Lake County by assisting residents and commercial businesses in obtaining building permits and inspections.  

The MSD Building Department works to provide a process that is timely and efficient.  We interpret and enforce the building code for new and existing construction sites and new or updated business locations.  We recognize the building process is part of a strong and safe community. Our professional staff has years of experience and is committed to reviewing building, fire, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings to ensure buildings are constructed in accordance with existing building codes.

To schedule an inspection, please call the Building Inspection Hotline (385) 910-5830 or email a request to inspections@msd.utah.gov before 3:00 pm to schedule your inspection for the following business day. Please leave your request information in the following order: 

  1. Building Permit Number or Business License Number 
  1. Property Address 
  1. Type of Inspection 
  1. Date the Inspection is Needed 
    1. If you are requesting a footing, foundation, or other concrete inspection, please provide an approximate time between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM. All other inspections do not receive a time frame
  1. Name and Daytime Phone Number of a Contact Person 

The building inspector will not call before arriving on site for the inspection. If you need to coordinate or find out when they will be coming, it is your responsibility to call our office at (801) 927-0914 between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. the morning of the inspection to arrange with the inspector. Failure to do so may result in a failed inspection and a re-inspection fee. Thank you for your cooperation.

Mutual Aid Agreement

In conformance with the Utah State Code 10.1.160(2), the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (MSD) hereby declares that they have entered into a Mutual Aid Agreement with the following jurisdictions for building inspection services if the MSD is unable to fulfill a request for inspection with three or more days' notice:

  • West Valley City (3600 Constitution Blvd, West Valley City, UT 84119)
  • Sandy City (10000 S Centennial Parkway, Sandy, UT 84070)
  • West Jordan City (8000 S Redwood Road, West Jordan, UT 84088)

In conformance with Utah State Code, use of any of these agencies must first be arranged with the MSD Building Inspectors.
